How To: Save Energy This Holiday Season

Joshua Chadwick By Joshua Chadwick March 11th

As we wind down 2022 and ring in the new year, it means the holiday season is here again.

The holidays are a joyous time for friends and family to laugh, share gifts and celebrate together.

However, the holidays are also the most energy-consuming time of year by a good margin. At MyConnect we’re here to help, with tips on how to save energy this holiday season.

Lead the way with LED

A main highlight of the holiday season is Christmas lights and, more specifically, the Christmas tree. While lighting up the tree and covering the house with lighting decorations, is also very energy consuming.

Older lights, which a majority of households will own, are the main crux for energy consumption. Consider switching to LED lights, as they use 70% less energy than their non-LED counterparts.

They are also brighter, more eco-friendly and safer as they don’t burn as harshly, and also don’t overload sockets. These LED lights also last longer due to not having glass or filaments.

Manage your holiday lights properly

While a well-lit house full of ornaments and lighting decorations looks beautiful, they don’t need to be on 24/7. Ensure you utilize your lights properly by turning off house lighting while our decorations are up. A Christmas tree should light up the room well enough at night time.

Leaving lights on as you go to bed is also a big energy eater. Ensure you turn off all lights as you go to bed and turn off lights at the power point.

If you do want lights to stay on well into the night, consider using an automatic timer to turn off the lights automatically without the hassle at night.

Maintain the cooking

The holiday season is also a big eating season, as family and friends come together and celebrate with well-prepared meals.

Ensure your energy isn’t being completely drained through cooking by cooking several dishes at once. A half-empty oven will use up the same amount of energy as a full oven, so preparing multiple meals at a time will assist in better monitoring your energy usage.

Fight the heat correctly

For us Australians, the holidays fall right at the beginning of Summer, with hot weather on the inbound. While the AC seems like the go-to idea, consider other ways to stay cool while being energy conscious.

Closing windows, doors and vents, keeping blinds closed and sealing cracks and spaces where heat can escape into the household are many alternatives to help keep your home cool during the holiday season.
